25th January 09

After being unlucky with bad weather we finally got this new series on the way this Sunday in HYC thanks for Andrew and John who came up from Cork for racing with us. We had 6 skippers and we quickly started racing in what was A rig conditions. Jeff was racing his trusty Red Disco, Des is Black Disco, Andrew his Isis, John his Cockatoo8, Fergal his TS2 and me well since my new boat was not ready yet John kindly brought his Cockatoo for me to sail. My point is that as you can see we had a good panel of designs and yet we had really close racing with John coming out first, winning 4 races but no race was won with ease by any skipper.

As the wind strengthened the top rig proved challenging at times but only in strong gusts and we all decided to keep our top rig as we knew the wind was highly variable but with gusts to be of short duration only, making the top rig the one to have.

At the end it was another successful racing day where everyone had great fun.

15th March 09

What a fantastic day for the season. Light wind, clear sky “Ish” and a great location thanks to Lough Dergh Yatch Club who not only welcome us but also provided us with a rib and even marks - so a Big thank you goes to them for their support.

We had 9 skippers there with 3 quite new skippers which is encouraging for the class. Despite a later then scheduled start we still managed to complete our 10 races. After putting what I can only guess to be a massive amount of hours in a very short time Andrew had his brand new ISIS ready for her first test - and despite very few  teething problems Andrew scored very well showing the potential of his new boat. It was the second and first “big” race for Fergal and Gilbert with their new boat and both showed good pace.

5 Different skippers won at least one race which show how close it was. But towards the second half of the day it was John who emerged from the pack and he went on to win the last 3 races adding to his 2 previous wins earlier in the day made him the overall winner of the day. 17th May 09

What a season - despite being in mid-May we had a rather wet day as we all got soaked during the first race as we got “hit” by a  squall . Nonetheless we had a good turnout with a member of LDYC sailing our class Widget for the first time. We completed our scheduled 12 races in varying top rig conditions. From 15-18 knots of wind in the gusts of the first few races to hardly any wind at all for the last 3 races. The rain resulted in some casualties as Des’s transmitter got too wet to its liking and stopped working, Richard and Naul had electric issues with their boats.

One good news though as there was no one who clearly dominated the day but Andrew, John and Gilbert shared race wins but never by a long lead - often races were not decided until the finishing line. This is good racing despite varying and fluky conditions. Thank you to LDYC for their warm reception as usual and Chris Bruen who - boatless - kindly did our race officer.
